Game of Thrones – Episode 4.4 “Oathkeeper”

got404a

Synopsis: For a series with so much action, it’s kind of crazy there are two separate storylines dealing with illiteracy. First Shireen with Davos, now we get Missandei helping Grey Worm learn the common tongue. In doing so, they share a little bit about their histories as slaves. Daenerys and Selmy interrupt, lessons will have to wait. It’s time. Grey Worm and a group of unsullied infiltrate Mereen, and find their way into a meeting of slaves. The slaves weigh the pros and cons of revolution. Grey Worm brings them weapons to help them in their cause. He says no one can give them their freedom, they have to take it. The next morning, they do. A group of masters are chased down and killed. Later, when the rest of the masters are rounded up, Dany orders that 163 of them be crucified, in exchange for the 163 slaves that were crucified as a warning for her on the way to city. Selmy cautions against it, but Dany is firm. The men are crucified. At the pyramid-like tower of Mereen Dany stands above the city, her flag hanging behind her. In King’s Landing, Bronn and Jaime continue their training. Jaime asks Bronn if he thinks Tyrion was behind Joffrey’s murder. He doesn’t. Poison isn’t his style. Nor murder. Bronn chides Jaime for not visiting Tyrion. So, he does. Jaime apologizes for not visiting sooner, but Tyrion understands it’s complicated. He asks if Cersei asked Jaime to kill him, and he says she did. Tyrion wonders if that’s why he came, but Jaime knows he didn’t do it. He thinks Sansa was involved, why else would she disappear, but Tyrion knows his wife is not a killer, not yet, he says. On the ship, Sansa asks Littlefinger where they are headed. Baelish says they are going to her aunt Lysa’s, where is to be married to her. Sansa asks him if he killed Joffrey. He says he’s been in the Vale, but Sansa says he was obviously working with someone. He doesn’t name his accomplice, but admits that her necklace housed the poison that was used. He admits that he had other friends that wanted Joffrey gone.

got401a

Synopsis: Tywin pulls Ice, Ned Stark’s sword made of Valyrian steel, from its sheath and hands it to his forgers. It is melted down and two swords are made in its stead. Jaime receives the larger of the two new swords. Tywin wants Jaime to retire from the Kingsguard and he tells him to return home to Casterly Rock to rule in Tywin’s stead. Jaime says no. Tyrion, Bronn, and Podrick await the arrival of the Prince of Dorne. Tyrion says there is bad blood between the Lannisters and the Martells of Dorne. The party from Dorne arrives, but the prince has not arrived, and has sent his brother, Oberyn instead, only he’s not with them. At the brothel, Oberyn meets with a selection of whores with his companion Ellaria Sand. They choose one of the whores and Oberyn invites the man offering the girls to stay as well. All is well until someone in another room is singing “The Rains of Castamere,” the Lannister song. Oberyn taunts the men, stabbing one in the wrist until Tyrion enters, interrupting. Tyrion welcomes them to the capital. Privately, Tyrion asks Oberyn why he came to the wedding. Oberyn recalls how Tywin killed his nephew and niece, and that The Mountain raped and murdered his sister. Oberyn swears that the Lannisters aren’t the only ones who pay their debts. Dany watches her dragons play in the air and feed on a sheep. When she touches them as they feed, one snaps back at her. Jorah cautions that dragons can never be tamed, not even by their own mother. Tyrion tries to comfort Sansa, still grieving the massacre of her brother and mother. He says even though Cat wanted him dead that he respected her. Tyrion returns to his chambers to find Shae ready to seduce him. He turns her down, and they argue. She says he tried to pay her to leave and he denies knowing what she’s talking about. As Shae leaves the room, a woman lurks in the hallway, having overheard everything.

Captain Marvel

marvel

Captain Marvel is one of my favorite characters from the comic books. She’s a badass. She’s endured every possible plot device and come out swinging. And, she’s a badass. While the movie certainly captures her character, for the most part, it’s interesting they chose two things to pull that weren’t remotely necessary-her amnesia and her convoluted history. The movie does nothing to streamline her origins, trading one mess for another, and saddling the main character with no real character to latch, are two pretty big missteps for a movie that is doing pretty well otherwise. On a scale of say Iron Man to Hulk, this film falls somewhere just below Ant-Man: an endearing lead and solid supporting cast make for an okay movie, that is missing a few of the thrills we’ve come to expect from the MCU.

got310a.jpg

Synopsis: The Twins is on fire. A slaughter still wages in the streets. A shell-shocked Arya looks on as her brother, Robb, decapitated with his Grey Wind’s head attached, is paraded through the streets. The Hound rushes her out of town. Sansa and her new husband, Tyrion, walk in the garden to snickers and sneers of passersby. They joke over options for revenge when Podrick interrupts: Twyin has called an urgent meeting of the small council. When Tyrion arrives, Joffrey has a full-on sadism boner when they share news of the deaths of Robb and Catelyn. Tyrion threatens Joffrey and when he lashes back, Tywin puts a stop to it. Joffrey snipes at his grandfather and is abruptly put to bed. As the others leave, Tywin and Tyrion continue to argue about Tywin’s machinations. The north will never forget this, Tyrion warns. Tywin urges Tyrion to put a baby in Sansa as soon as possible so that their son can rule the North, until then Roose Bolton is named Warden of the North. As the men argue, Tywin tells his son a happy little memory about how he wanted to drown him the day he was born, but opted to let him live, to his daily regret. When Tyrion returns to his chambers, Sansa is in tears. She’s heard the news. Probably aren’t making that baby any time soon. Meera, Hodor, Jojen, Summer and Bran take shelter in an abandoned fort. Bran tells the other a story he heard about a cook that fed the king his sons and the gods turned him into a rat. Apparently, the gods frown upon murdering a guest under your own roof. Speaking of Walder Frey, he gloats to Roose about the slaughter. Edmure is in a dungeon, but the Blackfish got away Roose reminds him. Roose tells Frey that his son has taken Winterfell and turned the Iron Born against Theon.
