Beautiful Boy

Like most addiction stories on film, Beautiful Boy follows a particular formula, tracking the cycle of drug abuse from recovery through relapse and back again. Based on the memoirs of father-son Nic and David Sheff, and realized by co-writer Luke Davies and co-writer/director Felix von Groeningen, the film is unflinching in showcasing the effects of abuse on both the abuser the family that cares for him. Filled with quiet, honest performances, the film is affecting and uncomfortable, but also a bit too exhausting, feeling a bit like emotional porn (a big-screen, more focused “This is Us”).

Last Flag Flying

A lot of good will built up throughout the two hours of Last Flag Flying is undone in the final moments. It’s disappointing because if there was just a little bit of faith in the audience instead of what feels like a need to pander to them, it would’ve been a much better movie. As it stands, it’s still pretty good but after the peaks of director and co-writer Richard Linklater’s oeuvre (Boyhood, The Before series, Waking Life, Dazed and Confused), Flag comes off a bit trite and simple.

Battle of the Sexes

In some ways, the titular tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King featured in Battle of the Sexes, operates as a microcosm of the 2016 election: boorish letch challenges more qualified woman in a contest that is bigger than what it is on the surface. The denouement can be a bit cathartic in that way. I’m not as familiar with the actual match, other than a vague awareness of a TV movie called “When Billie Beat Bobby” so I had some idea which way this was going to go.
