There are worse things than Drew Goddard (co-writer and director of The Cabin in the Woods, writer of The Martian and Cloverfield) doing his best Quentin Tarantino impression, but “Bad Times at the El Royale” is an earnest effort that is exceedingly long and a bit too ambitious. It’s still an entertaining film, and worthy effort, even if it would’ve been a greater movie with a few edits and someone trying to reign the director in a bit.

Tag
There’s an inherent joy at the heart of Tag, a movie about a group of friends who have been playing the game for thirty years, which is based on a true story. The bonds between the group of friends are honest and heartfelt, even as they violently slap and punch each other to see who is next to be it. And while that sweetness is nice in a field generally dominated by cynicism and aggressive negativity, it’s not enough to carry a movie short on actual story, well-developed characters and anything really beyond the premise.

After Wright, the true hero of the film is the soundtrack, a music bed that drives (sorry) every scene.
